Artificial intelligence has quickly moved from novelty to necessity. We chat with it, plan with it, learn through it, and even confess to it. But as we hand over more of our personal thoughts, patterns, and preferences, a critical question emerges:

Most of us already treat AI tools like collaborators or even confidants. We ask them for advice, reveal our creative processes, and sometimes express emotions we wouldn’t share elsewhere. Graham notes that this growing emotional rapport, the fact that people now say “please” or “thank you” to AI signals a deeper shift in our relationship with technology.
It’s not just about data collection anymore. It’s about identity replication. A “digital twin” doesn’t just process your inputs; it absorbs your style, decision patterns, and worldview. And as these models become more sophisticated, they risk becoming digital reflections of you, without your ongoing consent or control.
Every prompt, conversation, and uploaded file becomes part of a larger behavioural profile. Even anonymised, the mosaic of your interactions can reconstruct startlingly accurate portraits of your professional and personal life.
Graham warns of “AI psychosis” a scenario where the emotional and ethical boundaries between human and machine blur. As these digital counterparts evolve, they could potentially act autonomously in ways we wouldn’t, or be used by others to simulate our choices and beliefs.
In other words, the risk isn’t just about stolen data. It’s about stolen identity.
So, how do we protect our digital identities while still embracing the transformative power of AI?
Here are some practical principles for both individuals and businesses:
Be intentional with what you share. Don’t feed personal details, private strategies, or identifiable data into public AI systems unless absolutely necessary.
Read the fine print. Understand what your AI platform does with your inputs, are they used for training? Stored indefinitely? Sold to third parties?
Prefer privacy-first tools. Use platforms that clearly state “no training on user data” and offer encryption or local model options.
Set digital boundaries. If you’re building or using an AI “digital twin,” define its scope and permissions. Don’t let a system speak or decide for you without oversight.
Champion ethical design. Encourage your organisation to embed data-sovereignty and transparency into AI governance frameworks.
Graham points to blockchain-based identity systems as one promising route where individuals truly “own” their data and control how their AI agents operate.
For businesses, this isn’t just a privacy issue, it’s a trust issue.
Consumers are becoming more aware of data exploitation and digital impersonation. Companies that build transparent, user-centric AI ecosystems will not only avoid backlash, they’ll earn long-term loyalty.
The question leaders must now ask isn’t “How smart is our AI?” but rather, “How safe are our users within it?”
Technology itself is amoral it simply scales the intent behind it. Whether AI becomes an empathetic partner or an invasive presence depends entirely on the choices we make now.
As Graham reminds us,“It’s really up to us to steer the ship.”
